Feelin’ The Burn for Burning Man?

It’s that time of year again. Burning Man is about to begin. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this annual event, Burning Man is a gathering that takes place in late August at Black Rock City – a temporary community erected in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Burning Man, which was initially started in 1986 on Baker Beach in San Francisco.

Burning Man draws people from all over the world, 70,000+ last year in fact, who come together to honor and celebrate the tenets that draw humans closer to one another, remove transactional relationships from the equation and allow people to focus on personal growth, spirituality and self-actualization. The event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: “radical” inclusion, self-reliance and self-expression, community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy and leaving no trace.

We love what Burning Man stands for. The focus on participation (self and group), self-reliance, and inclusion inspires people to focus on their inner strengths and gifts to become more aware of what we’re truly capable of. Through understanding and challenging ourselves, we can take personal responsibility and enact change as we see fit (in our lives, our families, our society). This is aligned with how we practice mindfulness: cultivating greater awareness of the thoughts, emotions, and sensations that drive our behavior so that we can live in greater alignment with our personal values.

As Burning Man gets ready to kick off, we look forward to seeing and hearing about all the experiences people are having on the Playa. Self-discovery is a path to enlightenment and a better understanding of the world around us. Stay mindful, and bring those of us back in the “default world” a taste of your experiences when you return!
